Are you excited about going to Canada, keep in mind student work. government has made three changes for international students. read more. Important news for Indian students studying in Canada or planning to go there. The Canadian government has made three changes for international students, effective from January 1, 2024. Immigration consultant Parthesh Thakkar shared detailed information about these changes.
Mandeep from the Montreal Youth Student Organization (MYSO) expressed worry about the new rules. He said, “Students already face money problems with high costs like IELTS exams, college fees, and rent. Instead of making things easier for international students, the Canadian government is making it harder by doubling the minimum money needed in Canadian banks for student expenses.”
Mandeep explained, “Before, this minimum amount was 10,000 Canadian dollars, and now it’s more than double. When students deposit this, banks give them a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). Right now, they can take out about 670 dollars each month for expenses. But with inflation and the new minimum money needed, this limit might double. This extra burden will make it tough for deserving students to study in Canada because money is really important.”
The first change is related to Canadian visas. Earlier, students had to deposit 10,000 Canadian dollars (approximately 6,20,000 Indian Rupees) as a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) in a local bank to get a Canadian visa. With this doubling, you will now need to pay 20,635 Canadian dollars annually, which is around 12,66,000 Indian Rupees.
Another change allows international students from India and other countries planning to stay in Canada, and who applied for a student visa before December 7, 2023, to work full-time until April 30, 2024. Instead of 20 hours off-campus, they can now work for 40 hours per week.
The third change involves extending the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023. The government has increased the validity of these three-year permits to 18 months for free. If you want to extend it further, you need to follow the required process. This change emphasizes the need to either continue your studies or find employment after graduation.
Now, let’s understand these three changes in detail…
Great news for students planning to study in Canada. The Canadian government is providing extra encouragement for international students coming for studies. According to sources, now international students will need to spend more money for living and studying there. Additionally, they will need to show a strong financial background. This change was announced by Mark Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship. The impact of this decision is expected to be felt by students worldwide.
The first change is about the increase in money. This new decision will be effective from January 1, 2024. Mark Miller announced that previously, international investors had to deposit 10,000 Canadian dollars in the Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) since 2000. However, as Canada is committed to providing quality living, if there are more funds, it will be possible. For this purpose, the Canadian government has increased the annual tuition and living fees in the country in simple language in the GIC. It has been raised from 10,000 to 20,635 dollars. So, Indian students who had to give 6,20,000 GIC every year will now have to give 12,66,000 GIC.
In addition, Minister Miller updated three temporary policies affecting international students. This includes a waiver in the off-campus work limit until April 30, 2024, allowing students to work up to 40 hours per week instead of the usual 20 hours. Minister Miller also stated that the Canadian government has extended the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for international students going to Canada in 2021, 2022, and 2023 to 18 months.
Now, the government announced that students wanting to extend their stay after graduation won’t get an extension. For this, students need to follow the policy made by the Canadian government. Whether they want to pursue further studies or work, only those who follow this policy will be allowed to stay for a longer time after completing their graduation.
